Help pass the Child Victim's Act in your state

The National Association to Prevent Sexual Abuse of Children (NAPSAC) is a national organization working to prevent a most pervasive and hidden danger:  childhood sexual abuse.

One in five children in America is a victim of childhood sexual abuse at a staggering cost to us all.  That's why we must expose offenders and those who protect them.  We must change laws to protect innocent children, not powerful adults.

"Our most powerful tool is the light of truth. Through our stories and actions, we bring healing and justice."

Thompson Commentary: Grandpa abusing grandchild should motivate change in law
Thursday, May 15, 2008
In spite of all the media surrounding Pope Benedict XVI addressing child sexual abuse by priests, the report of Miranda Meza, a Greeley, Colorado woman seeking justice for being sexually abused by her grandfather when she was a child is much more likely to conjure up family “secrets” long repressed. States graded on reporting children's deaths

More than half the states received a "C+" or lower grade, including 10 states that got an "F," for what they disclose about the deaths or serious injuries of abused or disabled children. The grades are based on whether the states have policies or laws requiring disclosure, the scope of the information and how accessible it is, and whether court proceedings are open.

Not Offensive
Friday, April 25, 2008
The Publisher of the Baltimore Jewish Times wrote a piece on March 21 that prompted a letter to the editor expressing how offensive the piece was to Catholics.  I wrote and submitted a response to that which was printed in the paper on April 25.  My letter along with the other items follow:

New CDC publication: Child Maltreatment Surveillance: Uniform Definitions for Public Health and Recommended Data Elements

Child maltreatment is a significant social and public health problem in the United States (U.S.).  In 2006, child protective services confirmed that approximately 905,000 children in the U.S. were victims of maltreatment and 1,530 died from abuse or neglect.  Unfortunately, these numbers likely underestimate the magnitude of the problem in this country.

Child Abuse Prevention Program Gains Steam
Of the U.S.'s $2.9 trillion budget in 2008, $459 billion will go to the military. Of that, $137 billion will pay for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, in which nearly 33,000 Americans have been killed or wounded.

In 2008, the federal government will spend $1.2 million for a Minnesota-based project that may end a plague that affects as many as 60 million Americans. The National Child Protection Training Center at Winona State University hopes to wipe out child sex abuse in three generations.
